Music producer Bobby Owsinski lists ten items to check in the studio before recording drum audio. Although most of the checks relate to the placement and calibration of the microphones, other checks relate to the location and tuning of the drums. When everything is in place, the resulting reference mix should sound as though one is standing in front of the drums.
