Check out this article that Joe Gilder of written for my daily audiophile roundup. He writes about more economical ways to get high quality recordings without the use of expensive vocal booths. Noises from electronic devices, such as the hum of a tv or a computer fan, can drown out a home-made audio recording. But, the use of gates or expanders can allow amateur vocal technicians to get quality sound samples in post production by cutting out this background noise.
