Donald Fagen chose Anthony Jackson to play the bass for I.G.Y–his 1982 solo classic. He chose Jackson because the bass part of the song required a master who could show restraint but hit the groove with the right tone at top dead center like a well-timed motor. While it may look a simple bass line, when played it becomes obvious that it requires careful orchestration, range, and articulation. Bass players should play it themselves to appreciate the skill it required.
