There is more than one way to tune a guitar. Not every song is written to be played with standard guitar tuning, E-A-D-G-B-E. A guitar that’s tuned differently can play different combinations of notes. Drop D, in which the E string is tuned down to a D, is a popular alternate tuning, and in open G tuning, the strings will produce a G chord without any fingers on the strings. Joni Mitchell is known for alternate guitar tuning, among other well-known artists.
