Greetings,
I’ve only begun educating myself on the advantages of treating a listening room a few months ago. I’ve hovered over the buy button more times than I can count only to read another article that furthered my doubts as to where to begin. My purchases will be done in phases as income allows. I understand the importance of being thorough with acoustic treatment. That said, where will I get the most bang for my buck in phase 1? My thought is first order reflection points would be the correct place to begin, however much of my frustration is born from unpleasant bass which makes me wonder if corner bass traps will address the issue more effectively. I have no measurements and would prefer to spend my money on broadband panels/traps than having to buy a laptop, mini-DSP and microphone.

My room is 10′ x 14′ x 8′ (speakers on the long wall). I have stand-mount speakers, a subwoofer also on the front wall in-between the l/r speakers. The floor is carpeted and has ample soft furniture throughout the room. There is an open doorway leading to a hallway to the left of my listening position and the wall to the right is an 8′ wide floor to ceiling sliding glass door covered by thin fabric vertical blinds. I’d really appreciate input on the most effective first purchase. Thanks.

Small critical listening rooms have two main issues: pressure and reflections. Rooms have unwanted pressure issues berween the surface areas. This modal pressure exaggerates certain sounds and eliminates others. You must first and foremost treat the lower frequencies below 100 hz. to ovoid this frequency exaggeration ot elimination. Reflections are much more easily managed. The key with reflection management is the rate and level of absorption used or the frequency response of thye chossen diffuser .You must treat all four walls and either the floor or ceiling with both pressure and reflection management technology if your goal is high room resolution.
