We have now found a room to put our speakers in and hopefully it is a dedicated room for listening. It houses just our electronics and our two channels worth of speakers. Now, where do we put our loudspeakers? Lets assume our room to be rectangular. Do we put our speakers in the narrower dimension firing down through the room’s length? Do we place them down the long wall firing into the shorter room boundary dimension. How far from the nearest walls or walls do they need to go. Where do I sit for best sound?

To start, we need to position our speakers and listening position as one unit which we must position correctly within our rectangular enclosure. Our sound triangle must be positioned in such a manner that room modes are minimized and the room’s frequency response is smooth not necessary flat. We can have some troughs and smaller peaks throughout the room response frequency range, but just small ones that are spaced apart. Where is that magical area for our “sound triangle” to fit. What must we consider.

First, we must look at room modes in every possible location choice. If we decide that out “sound triangle” needs to have an equilateral triangle with 8 foot sides, because we desire a wider speaker spacing to accommodate our preferred larger sound stage. We need to watch the speaker side wall distance if we choose to locate our “sound triangle” in the shorter dimension of our rectangular room. If we locate long wall way, we do not have side wall issues.
