Dennis,
I’m a new participant and have enjoyed looking at most of the videos on the academy part of the video archive. I’ve learned a great deal and now have many good acoustical science explanations for many things I have noticed involving high end stereo play back in different treated and non-treated rooms. In one of the videos you comment that you do not like using 3D quadratic diffusion in pretty much any application. I think the comment was something to the effect that 3D quadratic introduced confusion into the sound field compared with 2D which was why you always use 2D, although I may not have that quite correct. I may have missed something in another video on this subject and if so please direct me to which one.

My question is this. Is there any type of room or application where 3D quadratic diffusion, especially on a rear or front wall, would be better than 2D? I am thinking in particular of larger rooms used strictly for two channel play back. I am also wondering about their use with line source type speakers, either planar or otherwise, vs standard dynamic speakers. Maybe what I have heard with different rooms were issues with differences with more fundamental things other than the diffusion used and I wonder whether 3D diffusion used with line source speakers may defeat their very advantages by causing more negative effects from floor or ceiling reflections. I’m curious as to your thoughts on the subject

Sincerely,
Adam C. Reynolds. Boise ID.

Let me refine the question. I guess the question is 2D quadratic diffusion with alternating 90 degree orientation of units next to each other, like I see in many of your room builds on ceiling and back walls in particular, vs. 3D quadratic using the same frequency sequences. And the possible difference in application of diffusion with line source speaker systems vs. point source systems for stereo playback only. Some of the manufactures of line source systems, especially planar dipole types, make a big deal of about diffusion having to be very different between the two. I’m not so sure and am wondering what you think.

Sincerely.

A, 2-D and 1-D diffusion application depends on the distance from the wall surface to ears and usage of the room.
