I wanted to elaborate some of the videos I made with Dennis the other day, specifically with VU metering and calibration, monitor calibration and even converter calibration. So I hope this helps out. So on the screen we have Room EQ Wizard up. It’s a great freeware that provides measurement and calibration tools for really anyone who is dealing with a two-channel speaker system. And there’s some very fundamental tools in here but there’s also some very advanced tools, it’s a great program.
So what I’m going to do though is explain to you while I’m actually calibrating it here in my office. I have a reference microphone plugged into a UAD Apollo unit just in channel 1 and that is what this decibel SPL reader in front of you is picking up. And I have a pink noise ready on the screen and it’s at -20 dbFS and it’s calibrated for speakers right now. And when I click on that it’s basically going to send the pink noise through my speaker system and my microphone which is at tweedle level in between my left and right channel. In the listening position I wanted to read somewhere around 83 decibels and give or take. I will probably go a little bit smaller just because my office is smaller and the dynamic range isn’t as broad.
So I’m going to go ahead and press this. And what you heard is the left channel but I think if you’re listening on the video it’s probably mono. The left channel just was the only one playing and I have it calibrated at about 81.5 decibels and so that’s fine for me. I’ve already calibrated it so I know it’s going to sit perfectly or as close to perfect as possible.
I’m going to turn my left speaker off and I’m going to turn my right speaker back on and only the right side is being played. And I’m going to do the same thing and if there’s any adjustments I need to make I’m going to go behind the speaker and use the trim on the speaker and again, I’m going to use it to try to get it as close to 81.5 decibels as I can.
So there. That one is a little low. I’ll probably adjust it a little bit but what you’re trying to do is get both the left and right speaker calibrated as closely as possible so that you’re imaging in your center mono is up the middle. So that when you select both speakers to go on and you run this pink noise at -20 dbFS you’re going to want to sit around 86 SPL level.
So yeah, so that’s calibrating and you know, the more I do it the more I get used to my room and my speakers. I’m sure if I spread my speakers out wider I could get the left and right channels closer to that 83 mark but what you’re going to find is that if you can find that 86 decibels in stereo mode in your room then you’re going to kind of know what your threshold on each speaker can be whether it’s 81.5 like me or 79 or whatever that is. So this is where your acoustics come in for your room. Mine is very poorly treated but I still understand the process and it helps generate a reference level whenever I’m mixing or listening.
