Hey everyone.

I’m looking at building a small isolation room in a large spare room I have that is being used as a back store for a shop. I have a small studio opposite my shop which will be the control room. I will being using it to track vocals, guitar and bass amps, acoustic guitar and percussion such as tambourines shakers congas etc. It’s needs to be relatively small (about 30-50 square foot) and isolate sound relatively loud. I won’t be putting drums in there but I would like the option of cranking a guitar amp.

Could anyone advise on how I can go out working out what dimensions and shapes would sound best. Height is also not much of an issue. I’m on a tight budget tho and will be building it myself. I do have a load of high density concrete blocks that I could use. I won’t be worrying about a window. Once it’s built I have an omni reference mic I can use with room eq wizard to analyse the room to help decide what treatment to use.

All advise is very welcome!
Thanks in advance
Will.

Hi Denis. I think you’ve misunderstood. I have not built the building yet. I was asking how I can work out what size to build to get a decent sounding room?

W, You are asking for complex design work to be performed. Matching the correct volume and size to the usage takes time to evaluate. There is no one size fits all contrary to what the literature says. With the “cranking guitar amp”, it sounds to me like you will need extensive barrier technology along with treatments. Here is our design fee services and fees:

Our room design services are broken down into two parts: noise and treatment. Each has an associated fee of 1,500 USD. If you require both noise and treatment services, the fee is 2,500.00. A credit of 50% of all design fees will be credited towards technology purchases from Acoustic Fields.

TREATMENT

The treatment design includes room size and volume, source (speaker)/listening positions within room size and volume for 2 – 40 channels, all low, middle, and high-frequency absorption management, including proper rates and levels of absorption to match usage, type/amount/position. All middle and high-frequency diffusion specified as to type/amount/position to include proper diffusion frequency response/usage. All DIY drawings are provided for all specified treatments and types. Telephone consultation is available to assist you with any build or product implementation.

NOISE

Noise analysis includes all internal/ external noise frequency and amplitude measurements taken by the client under my assistance. Noise measurements are taken inside and outside of the subject room twice a day over 7 days. Barrier design based on these seven-day noise study showing frequency, amplitude, and SPL. DIY drawings provided for barrier design are based on these measurement numbers. Material list provided to build the specified barrier. Telephone consultation is available to assist you with any build or product implementation.
